Baseball Betting Systems
Baseball has been a popular sport to bet on for over a century. Over time, gamblers have come up with a number of systems that try to get an edge over the bookmakers when betting baseball. The following is a sample of a few of the most popular systems out there. While you shouldn’t rely solely on any one system to pick your games, looking at games that would fit into these systems might give you some ideas for bets that you should seriously consider taking.
Betting Underdogs
While it’s probably too simple to be called a “system,” many baseball bettors swear by betting on the underdogs time and again. This is because baseball betting is usually done on a money line basis, and without a spread, more of the public money tends to go on the favorite – even if they aren’t getting the proper odds to make those bets.
In the long run, simply betting underdogs isn’t enough to make a profit from baseball, but they do perform better than favorites. Underdogs in divisional games or underdogs that are coming off a win tend to do even better than all underdogs as a group.
Favorites After a Loss
Another popular system is to bet big favorites the day after they’ve lost. The idea is that a good team, coming off a loss, is likely to bounce back the next day.
Many gamblers will see this as a form of the gambler’s fallacy – the idea that a run of losses will be “balanced” by a run of wins. However, we’re not talking about two independent events; in this case, we’re dealing with a team that wants to avoid a losing streak and score a win against a weaker opponent. With that in mind, we want to focus on games where all the factors are in our favor. Betting favorites after a loss works best when the following apply:
· The favorite is playing the same team the next day, so that they can exact revenge on their opponents.
· The favorite was a big favorite for the first game – at least -200 or more.
· The favorite is a smaller favorite in the second game, but still clearly favored to win.
· The opponent is not a divisional opponent (divisional opponents tend to play well every game, while non-divisional opponents have more down days).
Revenge Systems
Many baseball betting systems are based on the idea that team will come back after a loss to take revenge on that same opponent. These are known as revenge systems. While there are any number of ways to use such a system, one popular one is to look at teams that got swept by a rival in their last series. These teams will tend to come back with a win more often than the odds might suggest the next time they play against that team. This is especially true when the two teams are divisional rivals, and when the team that got swept in the last series is now playing at home in front of their fans.
While none of these gambling systems are sure things, they can point you in the direction of bets you might not otherwise have looked at. The best way to use them is to find a bet that fits into one of these systems, and then do your normal research.
