How Sportsbook Bonuses Work?

Online betting is a huge business. New sportsbooks are starting up left and right, desperate to bring in new bettors. They do this via a number of different tactics such as advertising, viral marketing, excellent odds and sportsbook bonuses.

Indeed the sportsbook bonus has become such a useful tool to those who are running an online betting site that it has almost become an industry in it's own right. Websites all over the world work against each other to offer the best sportsbook bonus package in an effort to get attention.

What is a Sportsbook Bonus?
Before we get into how sportsbook bonuses work, it is best that we define just what a sportsbook bonus is. A sportsbook bonus is given to new sign ups at a betting site. Most online sportsbooks will offer a financial incentive to sign up and bet with them.

How do These Bonuses Work?
Some sportsbook bonuses take the form of a free bet, or a matched bet (e.g. You bet $250 and they will give you another $250 on that bet for free, making the bet worth $500). Such methods are great for the bettor because if you win the bet you are getting double the winnings. Sometimes the money is offered up to the bettor in “Free Play” money. With this you can use your free play money to bet on anything you’d like. As you win those bets, the free play is converted into real money. If you lose a free play bet, you don’t lose any of your real money.

Of course how the bonus works varies from sportsbook to sportsbook. There are typically some specific rules that go along with receiving a sportsbook bonus. These rules are different at each site so be sure to take note. Some of the most common rules you might see are:

  • A minimum amount of money won, or bets made, before you can cash out the free money they give to you.
  • A minimum amount of time registered before you can cash out the bonus money.
  • A minimum bet amount made to qualify (e.g. bet must be over $100).
  • A minimum amount of money deposited into your account with the betting site.
  • A time limit on how long you can have the bonus without withdrawing it.

You really need to check the fine print offered on sportsbook bonuses before you decide which bonus offer is best for you.

Other Sportsbook Bonuses
It is not just the new sign ups that get targeted for these bonuses, though they do get most of the attention. Occasionally sportsbooks will offer sportsbook bonuses to existing players. These bonuses can come in a number of forms but the most common one is the “reload bonus”. The sportsbook will offer players a small bonus for adding more money into their account. It’s a way for the sportsbooks to keep their returning players playing. Sometimes books will give players a free bet on special games such as the Superbowl or the World Cup. These types of bets usually come with some restrictions or some sort of deposit requirement.
