In light of the events of Black Friday and its follow-up, what’s apparently been dubbed “Blue Monday”, in which the US government closed down over a dozen sites collectively for doing operations within the United States, Bodog Casino is taking pre-emptive measures to avoid such action by changing their domain name from a US-based “.com” to a European-based “.eu”.
If you play at Bodog Poker or Bodog Casino, don’t be alarmed if the next time you head to the site to play you don’t see what you’re accustomed to seeing on the screen – perhaps a redirect, perhaps a “We’ve Moved” notice of some sort. Bodog has not closed up operations, nor has the US Department of Justice forced the site closed in its recent spate of seizures and raids. Rather, the brains behind Bodog are trying to skirt just that by getting out of .com arena post haste.
In truth, the Bodog press release on the subject says they’ve been planning this since December 2010, long before the government raids were taking place (that’s good, guys – stick with your story). But the timing seems too coincidental not to be somehow related to this shakeup in the online gambling world.
Websites with a .com extension are managed by VeriSign, a company based in the U.S.. Bodog says they’ll be taking this opportunity to focus more on the Asian and Latin American player base, particularly those parts of the market that their Bodog88.com franchisee isn’t focused on.
Whether Bodog will have made this move fast enough to avoid prosecution remains to be seen.
