There are not a lot of strategies or techniques that you can use when playing Pai Gow, since the game is more based on chance and luck than anything else. It has been said time and again that when you play Pai Gow, you should pray to high heavens that your lucky stars are with you; otherwise, be prepared to lose.
This however, should not render us completely helpless when it comes to figuring out tile combinations that could increase our chances of winning. By getting ourselves familiar with all available betting options in Pai Gow; plus the tiles combinations that could give us better odds at winning; we can start playing more knowledgeably and perhaps gain the expertise of seasoned players after a short while.
Hands to Watch Out for in Pai Gow
A few seasoned Pai Gow players have come up with their own strategies when it comes to choosing the best hands to play. We can try these out as well if only to find out if they really work.
Some of these Pai Gow hands include selecting pairing combinations. If you are given tiles that come in 2 pairs; stick with the pairing and don’t split them up. On the other hand, if you have a pair and your other tiles reveal pips of six-four; six-five or six-six; you should mix your pair with any of these other given tiles.
If you have two tiles of two’s or twelve’s – meaning a pair of twos’ or twelve’s – break them up only if you can get a nine-eleven or anything higher than a six-eight combination.
If you have two five’s; only break them up if you can get a two-twelve.
As for other tile hands; if you get a total of three, four or five; or thirteen or fifteen; select your top low combination and use this against the dealer. If you have seven or eight in total pips; select your top high combination to play.
There are other pointers that we can use when considering which best hands to play in Pai Gow; and these may seem confusing at first. But once you get more familiar with all the combinations and their symbolic value; you will find it easier to figure out which ones are the best combinations with every four-tile stack that you get in each Pai Gow round.
