Could Using the Chat Reveal Your Game?

All over the internet you will find references to the fact that poker is a game that uses human interaction and movement to offer an insight another players hand, this is more aimed towards the live version of the game due to the fact that while playing online the only thing that you see about a person is their avator that is seated at the table to represent them.

With your opponents been offered this level of cloaked play, online poker players are having to find alternative ways to read into an opponents game, obtaining information to which they plan to use against that player for their own financial gain.

Online poker sites are riddled with so many features that are placed into the site to allow poker players to communicate to each other during their poker sessions and some more experienced players and professionals have managed to realise that these features can infact work against opponents and grant the player information about the player.

One of the examples of these tell tale features would be the chat box feature, an area created so that players are able to talk and interact with each other. Never would an inexperienced or new poker player have thought that what they could say in that small area of the site could directly influence their opponents playing stance towards them.

A great example was today i was seated at a real cash game table on Full Tilt Poker when a new player joined the table, after seeing that he had struck up a friendship with another player at the table i was able to see him tell his new friend that he had just pulled of a huge bluff for a pot worth over $200, telling all those who could see the box where he had written that he was holding little more than low suited connectors.

Information like this is golden when you are looking to absorb information about a player and i was only to happy to make a note about his tale in the on screen notepad.

His mouth finally cost him his bankroll after i was able to trap him into a hand, he pushed his whole stack into the central pot and left me with a little over $100 to call for a pot worth over $500.

I took my time and went back over his play in my head, read the note and opted that my pair of kings were strong enough to take this pot, making that call to find that he had once again tried to bluff a large pot.

Should he have not told all of the online poker site that he had already bluffed a huge pot, i would have thought about his play and overbet a whole lot differently but its seems that his decision to share his ‘steal’ lead him to funding my account.

Although you can see people speaking to each other in the chat area, refrain from entering into any sort of conversation, keeping the air of mystery about you and your play will make your opponents have to work that bit harder to be able to get reads from you online.

An opponent that reads your play incorrectly is an opponent that is giving you money, take it!
