Reasons to Raise

For newcomers in the game of poker, raising can be a rather intimidating action. After all, when you raise, you willingly put more money than necessary on the line. You’re bringing up the stakes on your own will, so if you lose money, you’ll be losing it all on your own volition. However, raising is also one of the most useful actions in the game. If you learn how to raise properly, then your game will improve immensely. You’ll be able to win larger pots and you’ll also be able to avoid losing more money than necessary.

To Learn About your Opponents
Raising pre-flop is a very good way of learning about your opponents. With a well-timed raise, you can gather some useful information about your opponents. You can learn whether they’re tight or loose and you may also learn whether they’re passive or aggressive. Tight and passive players are more likely to fold if you raise pre-flop. But the aggressive ones will call your raise and keep on playing. You can tell if they’re loose players if they call or even raise when you do. You can file this information away for the later parts of the game, where they will really be useful.

It will also be good if you couple this knowledge with an analysis of the hand histories and the decisions of the other players throughout the course of the game. Learn to read your opponent well and you’ll find yourself winning pots nonstop.

To Make a Convincing Bluff
Another reason why people raise is to make a bluff or a semi-bluff look more convincing. People bluff in order to intimidate opponents into folding. The higher you raise, the more intimidated they will be, especially if their hands aren’t that good. However, bluffing also means that you’re running the risk of someone calling your bluff. And that means you’re going to lose money. Still, the information you gather throughout the game will come in handy when you bluff. Aggressive players tend to be more likely to call your bluff. If, however, a passive player calls your bluff, be afraid because he might just have a really good hand.

To Add to the Value of the Pot
Let’s say that you have a really good hand this time and that you want to make the most out of it. To do this, you need to raise the value of your bets and entice other people to really call your bet. The best way to do this is to make moderate sized raises during the pre-flop or to simply check. This will lull your fellow players into a false state of security and they will be more willing to invest their own money. Then, after the turn comes, raise the stakes a bit and see if they bite. Always remember, though, that the most important part is the betting that comes after the river. It is at this point that you will really put the pressure on your opponents.
