Three Kinds of Poker Variants

Poker has indeed turned out to be one of the most popular card games of today. It has come a long way from way back and has evolved into different forms. They differ in terms of the hand values, number of betting opportunities, the manner the cards are dealt and the actions the player can make during the course of the games. The different forms of poker can be categorized in three kinds of variants. The three popular poker variants would be the Draw Poker, Stud Poker and Community Card Poker.

Draw Poker

Draw poker is a poker variant in which the players are dealt a complete set of hand before the first round. The player then improves his hand by drawing cards to replace his during the later parts of the game. The most common type of poker from this variant would be the standard five-card draw which can be played by two up to eight people. This is most often the first type of poker learned by people. Other forms of draw poker include California Lowball and other lowball games, Badugi, Baduci, Gardena Jackpots, Q-ball, Double draw, Triple Draw, and so on.

Stud Poker

In this type of poker variant, the players receive a mix of face down and face up cards dealt during the progression of the game. The cards faced down are called the hole cards. Different forms of Stud Poker have different numbers of betting rounds. As of today, the most popular form of this type of poker variant would be the 7 card stud. Other forms of this variant include Six card Stud, Razz, Eight or better high low stud, High low stud no qualifier, Mississippi stud, Mexican stud, Caribbean stud, and other forms.

Community Card Poker

The third type of poker variant would be the Community Card Poker. In this variant, the game is played with community cards, or shared cards. The players are dealt with a specific number of cards also known as the hole cards. The community cards are revealed to the players and they may make use of a number of them in combination to their hole cards to form their hand. In terms of its betting system, it is generally a positional game, in which the player to make the initial bet changes every round. The most popular type of Community Card Poker would be Texas Hold’em.

As of today, poker has turned into many different forms of card games. The three variants listed above are but the popular three variations of the game. There are more variations that make things interesting for the players such as modifying betting rounds, dealing manner, actions and so on. It is also common to see types of poker that combines elements of the variants to make things even more interesting. If you are playing against your friends in a home game, you can even modify some of the rules to meet your group’s playing style or even balance out the game play for more fun.
