What are Parlays?

What are Parlays?

For a chance to win real big money, parlay bets are the way to go. Now, in saying that, be careful with parlay bets, because too many of them and you could find yourself with an empty bank roll.

Parlays are extremely popular among American sports bettors. The reason they are so popular is they give the best chance of you winning a large amount of money by risking just a little. A parlay is a collection of bets put together on more than one team. The twist with a parlay is, they must all win, or you lose. You could play a nine-team parlay for 150k, but if the Utah Jazz lose to the Los Angeles Clippers like you bet they would, you lose. It doesn’t matter how awesome your other eight bets in the parlay were.

Bettors can use all sorts of different types of games in a parlay. If a bettor wants to put some early season MLB action with some playoff NBA action, they are more than welcome to. The best time of year is in late September when a bettor can wager on MLB, NFL and NCAA Football all at the same time. For example, if you wanted a three team parlay of the Chicago Cubs, New England Patriots and Nebraska all three to win, you can do that.

The odds for standard spread or over/under parlays typically look something like this:

  • 2 teams 13/5
  • 3 teams 6-1
  • 4 teams 10-1
  • 5 teams 25-1
  • 6 teams 40-1
  • 7 teams 75-1

For example, if a bettor was to place $10 on a seven-team parlay, using point spread bets, if all seven bets won, the bettor would net roughly $750. See what we mean, little wager can equal high reward! Some books allow all the way up to a 12-team parlay. A $10 wager on a 12 teamer can return thousands and thousands of dollars. But what are the true odds of this happening? Slim to none!

Bettors can also use Moneyline bets during parlays. Things get a little trickier with Moneyline bets. Because Moneyline bets have the chance to be an easier win for the bettor, they may not pay as high. For example if the New York Yankees at -250 was in the parlay that would not pay off nearly as much as the Detroit Pistons -2.5(-110) would. The Yankees payout would be -250%, while the Pistons would pay a normal amount (-110). The odds on Moneyline parlay bets will vary greatly on the odds for each of the bets within the parlay. We won’t attempt to make a chart for these but if you go to your favorite Sportsbook, place a Moneyline parlay bet and see what the payouts are.

While a parlay bet may be a juicy idea due to the amount of winnings available, bettors should be careful. Understand that betting on sports is not as easy as it seems, and it takes quite a night to be able to accurately predict winners in numerous games. Always remember, one loss in your parlay and you lose.

How to Use Money Line Parlays

One of the best tools a bettor can use is the money line parlay betting.  Money line parlays have two main benefits: the exponential value of parlays and the simplicity of money lines. If you’ve ever used a parlay before, then you know how quickly your return can increase as more games are added in. The simplicity of the money line is that you pick a team based on the fact that you think they are going to win. There is no worrying whether they will win by 2 or 10 or 20; all you need is a W by your picked team. Combine these two benefits together and you get a tool that is easy to use and easy to control.
There are two main types of money line parlays: an aggressive money line parlay, and a “safe” money line parlay.
The “safe” money line parlay is a low risk, low reward type of bet. This is the type of bet you can use when you are looking to strengthen your bankroll, and not have to worry too much over the games involved.   When you are making this type of money line parlay, you want to eliminate all factors that could possibly burn you and cause you to lose this bet. Some of the circumstances you might want to avoid include:
·         Teams playing on the road
·         Teams playing the second night of a back-to-back (NBA)
·          Injuries to impact players on EITHER team (often has the opposite effect of what you might expect [Ewing Theory])
·         Any type of revenge factor for the team you bet against
Now let’s look at an example from NCAA Basketball. Here are the teams that you like to win (money line in parentheses): Duke -12 (- 1000), Kansas -15 (-1200), Xavier -8 (-500), Kentucky -20 (-2500). Now let’s look at how each of these affects the total parlay (running total in parentheses): Duke -1000 (-1000), add Kansas -1200 (-522), add Xavier -500 (-232), add Kentucky -2500 (-204). So despite the small amount of risk involved (assuming you avoided the extenuating circumstances), you would still get a 50% return on your bet. This is not the kind of bet that you will be raving to your friends about and buying rounds at the bar, but it is a low risk way to build your bankroll.
The second type is the aggressive money line parlay, a high risk, high reward version of this bet. This bet is very similar to the standard parlay, except that you still have the simplicity of the money line to work with. There are a couple of times when this strategy can be helpful: in games with close point spreads, or when you think an underdog will upset the favorite. In the aggressive money line parlay, you are not looking to strengthen your bankroll as much as you are looking to make the big hit. Let’s look at an example. The teams you think will win are: Villanova  -3 (- 145), Ohio St -5 (- 235), Georgetown +4 (+140), Syracuse pk (-110). Now let’s calculate and watch the value shoot through the roof: Villanova -145 (-145), add Ohio State -235 (+141), add Georgetown +140 (+478), add Syracuse -110 (+1003). So, for knowing the winners of four games (granted, they are predicted to be close, and one is an upset), you can get a 1000% return on your bet.
These two types are the most common kinds of money line parlays, but there are no rules that say you can’t combine the two types in one bet. In fact, this is often a excellent way to turn a standard -110 bet into something more valuable. Here is an example. You like West Virginia -6 (-110) to cover the spread in their game. Normally, this would be a $100 bet to win 90$, paying $10 in juice. But the same night, Michigan State -15 (-1350) is playing and you feel confident they are going to win without a problem. Combine the West Virginia spread with the Michigan State money line in a parlay, and instead of the -110 payout, it now becomes +105, eliminating the juice and then some, all for very minimal additional risk.
Just like every type of bet, there is no guaranteed winner, so play accordingly. But if used correctly, the money line parlay can be a valuable tool for a bettor.

Sports Betting Bankroll Management

Sports betting can be an extremely profitable hobby, but before you go throwing your money around (or away), you need to develop a plan and commit yourself to not deviating from it if you want to reap the benefits. Discipline and bankroll management are keys to long term success if you plan on turning a profit betting on sports. Sure, it’s tough. Not all people are capable of being patient, and sports betters are no exception. Common mistakes when betters start to lose are chasing and long-shot parlays. I’ll describe a couple of things not to do before I talk about ways to manage your bankroll.
Chasing refers to what betters do when they go on cold streaks and try to recoup their losses quickly. If Mr. Sportsbetter lost $100 on Game A, and, in an attempt to make up for his loss, bet $200 on Game B, he would be chasing. Chasing is a bankroll’s worst nightmare because you’re risking too much of your available money at any given time and making yourself vulnerable to big losses. Chasing becomes disastrous when betters lose multiple games in a row and end up with a goose egg as their account balance. The best thing you can do when you lose is to step back and look at your situation from a rational perspective (I know, not everyone is capable of this) and decide what to do from there.
Long-shot parlays aren’t the worst thing a better can do, but only when you have spare money in your account. If you have a spare $5 and want to try to sweep the board on any given night, go ahead, but big parlays are not a good way to make up for past losses. All too often, Mr. Sportsbetter will lose $100 on a game and put in a 10 team parlay to try to get his losses back for a low price with the thinking that he’s only losing about $5 if it doesn’t hit. However, it’s hard enough to pick ONE game right, let alone TEN. So why not save that $5? The odds of long-shot parlays hitting are absurdly bad. In the long run, every sports better is better off saving money rather than playing these.
So you’ve decided you want to bet on sports, you’ve told yourself you’re going to be disciplined, and you’re trying to find the best way to be profitable? Follow these 5 guidelines for bankroll management, and I can assure you you’ll be better off in the long run.
1.       Establish a realistic starting bankroll
Decide what you can afford to bet. Whether it’s $50, $500, or $5,000, find a starting number for your bankroll that fits your personal budget. Remember, this should be a dollar figure that you can lose and not drastically effect your lifestyle. This is the beginning of smart and disciplined betting.
2.       Determine your unit size (bet per game)
Sports betters prefer to talk about how much they’re betting in terms of ‘units’ instead of dollars. A unit refers to how much you’re betting on a game. If you start with a bankroll of $100, your standard unit should usually be 5-7% of your bankroll (5-7 dollars for a $100 bankroll).
3.       Determine a final goal for your bankroll
In order to do this, you first need to outline the time table that you’ll be calculating this during (usually season by season). At the beginning of a sport season, you should usually want to double your bankroll between 2-4 times.
4.       Determine when to fluctuate your bet size
The general rule of thumb is to only fluctuate your bankroll when you’re up, or else you’d be chasing. Common to most profitable sports betters, once your bankroll doubles, you double the size of your bets (If you start with $100 and your bankroll doubles to $200, betting between $10-$12 per game is an increased dollar amount, but still 5-7% of your bankroll). This step basically goes hand in hand with step 2, but gives you a little flexibility to adjust when you’re owning your bookie.
5.       STAY DISCIPLINED
We’re all trying to win money, that’s why we bet on sports. Sure, you could hit a hot streak and go up 100 units without any discipline, but the law of averages will eventually catch up to you. Staying disciplined and not deviating from your plan when you’re losing are imperative things to do if you want to profit from betting on sports.

Parlay Betting Strategies

One of the favorite bets for casual sports betting gamblers is the parlay bet. This bet allows a sports bettor to make just one small bet spread out across several different events – sometimes as few as two, sometimes as many as six or more. If the player wins every bet in the parlay, they can win a huge payout; a good six-team parlay might pay as much as 50-1!

These big payoffs are exciting, but they’re extremely volatile. Obviously, there is a lot of variance when dealing with trying to predict five or six outcomes with no margin for error, and even if you might have an edge against the house, you’ll lose a large percentage of the time, meaning you’ll be trading a lot of small losses for the occasional big win.

This can be a bad thing if you’re a very risk-adverse player, or if you’re putting too much of your bankroll on long shot parlays. But one critical thing to remember – and something you must know if you want to be successful in any form of gambling – is that in the long run, the only thing that matters is having a positive expectation. If you only win one in 40 parlays, but each one pays out 50-1, you’d be a fool to turn that down. The downside to parlays is that the house usually has a larger edge on them than individual bets, unless we can find a few bets we think we have a pretty big edge on to begin with.

So, how do we find good spots for parlay betting? The first idea is to find events that aren’t entirely independent of one another – meaning that if you win one bet, your odds of winning the other bets are higher than normal. One example that’s often thrown around is betting a favorite and the over in the same game, or the underdog and the under. The theory here is that underdogs tend to cover when they stay in a tightly played, low scoring game; if the favorite is pulling away enough to cover the spread, they’ve probably scored a lot of points. Unfortunately, the numbers suggest that this is a small effect, not enough to make parlays profitable. Another possibility is to look for parlays on the final day of the season in team sports. If there’s an early game that could influence how hard a team plays later in the day (by eliminating them from playoff contention, or locking them into a certain seeding), it might be worth betting on the result that causes that to happen, and then parlaying that by betting against the team that would have nothing to play for later on.

Another way to make parlays work is when you bet off of a card – the kind that local bookies and some brick and motor casinos use. These odds are often printed well before the games are going to be played, especially in football. If something causes the odds to change dramatically between the time the card is printed and the time you can submit your card for betting, then you might be able to find a great spot to gain an edge.

In most instances, parlays aren’t the best bets you can make, but it’s probably not fair to call them “sucker bets” as some experts do. If you can find a spot where the odds have turned in your favor, parlays can give you the chance to make a huge score with very little risk. Sure, you usually won’t hit a big parlay, but if you have the advantage, don’t be afraid to take it – and if you do win, it’ll give your bankroll an enormous boost.

5Dimes Offers Reduced Juice Rewards

Calling it their best bonus of all, according to players, 5Dimes Reduced Juice Rewards allow a player to risk less and win more.

In the sports betting world, juice usually requires a risk of $110 for each $100 they hope to win. But 5Dimes has come up with a way to help players risk less to win more. It’s called Reduced Juice and it’s a group of lower betting lines across all major sports. That includes boxing, Canadian football, grand slam tennis, MLB baseball, MMA fighting, NBA basketball, NCAA football and basketball, NFL football, PGA golf, and WNBA women’s basketball, as well as many other special events.

Reduced Juice are offered for straight wagers only, with these special Reduced Juice lines typically posted on event day. Ineligible bets for Reduced Juice include If Bets, Rolling If Bets and Parlays. They’re available for bets of $1 to $500 placed online only.

5Dimes Reduced Juice options include 10 cent money-lines, sides and totals on basketball and football. At those -105 odds players risk only $105 to win $100, what amounts to a 50% discount off the usual -110 odds.

There’s also popular 5-cent overnight money-line wagers on Major League Baseball, available overnight through 8am ET. There’s also 10 cent totals and run lines on MLB as well, all the through the night and on up to the opening pitch on game day.

BODOG

Bodog Sportsbook Review

Bodog was one of the first, and remains one of the best online sportsbooks in the business, launched in 1994. Play the inclusive sports betting variety and stakes range at Bodog Sports in a user-friendly, no-download environment. Deposits and withdrawals are quick and US players are always welcome.

Pros
US Players Accepted
Oldest Online Sportsbook (1994)
Proprietary Software
Unlimited 10% Welcome Bonus

Cons
Limited Sporting Events
No Live Chat Support

Summary
Bodog Sports is one of the oldest operating sportsbooks in the online gambling industry, first launched in 1994. Since that time, the supported technology – and certainly the speed – has seen great advancements. Bodog’s proprietary software has followed the trends of development, giving punters an all inclusive, well rounded online sports betting opportunity that is both user-friendly and easy to understand. He range of events available for wagering are a bit limited, but seem to cover the desires of most US sports bettors, which make up the majority of Bodog Sports populace.

Bonus
Bodog Sports has one of the more interesting welcome bonus offers around. The match percentage may seem low, but the overall value is incredible for serious punters. You will receive an unlimited 10% match bonus on your first deposit with Bodog Sports (minimum deposit $20). There is no said cap on the bonus you can receive. The only limitations are set by your chosen method of deposit.

Software
Bodog has developed and updates its own proprietary software brand, which means punters are in for a unique experience that is designed specifically to suit sportsbook fans. The Bodog Team also develops its own casino and poker room software, but it is obvious that the main focus is on the sports betting software. There is no need to download any software – all functions are available directly on the web site via Flash technology. Check out the Bodog Live feature to place bets in real time as you’re watching the event take place.

Sportsbetting Options
Bodog Sports has upped its available sporting events, having once offered a very low variety compared to major online sportsbooks. The selection is still below par with bigger sites, but covers all of the essentials, and then some, for the majority of members (mostly US players).

Sports: Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Darts, Football, Futures, Golf, Hockey, Horse Racing, Mixed Martial Arts, Motor Sports, Olympics, Rugby, Snooker, Soccer and Tennis.

Others: Business/Finances, Celebrities, Futures, Poker, Politics, Television and “Weird” Wagers.

Types of Bets
Bodog Sports features a wide assortment of bet types, including live bets, spreads, money lines, parlays, teasers, prop bets, futures, quarter lines, if bets and more. Overnight lines can be placed on NFL, NCAA, NBS and MBL. Online bets can be reversed if done so before the individual deadline. The only common complaint with Bodog Sports is that lines for non-conventional events are generally posted shortly before the event. You’ll have to keep an eye out for these to get in on the action.

Betting Limitations
Bodog Sports has a minimum wager requirement of only $1 in the online sportsbook. You can also wager over the phone, but the minimum wager increases to $50. Maximum bets range anywhere from $200 on Prop Bets to $2,000 on NFL/College Football Spreads.

Payment Methods
Bodog Sports has a very limited number of payment methods to choose from. Then again, Us players make up the majority of the memberships at Bodog, so the methods available are designed to suit US punters.

Deposits: Visa, MasterCard, and eWalletXpress.

Withdrawals: Check by Courier.

Customer Support
Bodog Sports has a great customer support department that is open 24/7. Support options include email and toll-free telephone in the United States. The staff is fast, friendly, knowledgable and always professional.

Other Gambling Opportunities
The Bodog Entertainment Group is also responsible for Bodog Poker and Bodog Casino. when you open a Bodog account, you are granted access to all online gambling venues – sports, Casino and Poker.

Bodog Casino is incredibly popular, with a massive game variety and user-friendly, privately developed casino software platform. While the online sportsbook draws the most activity, Bodog Casino is a perfect distraction while waiting for your sports bets to come through.

Bodog Poker is also quite popular, but the proprietary software does not receive quite as much attention as the sportsbook and poker room, therefore is not as advanced as bigger online poke rooms. Since it is not a part of any other poker network, most players come over from the casino and sportsbook. This translates to extremely loose competition at low and mid-level stakes.
