Welcome to this article about Texas Holdem poker. Our aim is that by the end of this article you should have a better understanding about bluffing your way to success in poker.

When participating in any form of poker, you are likely to come across a player who will try and provide you with wrong information in terms of if they have a good hand or not. It’s very likely that they will normally follow this procedure: Try to misguide you with facial expressions, movements and also by placing oversized bets online. There are many other techniques to bluffing your way to success but the above are what the majority use.

Experienced and professional poker players have to understand that, signs of strength or signs of weakness have been covered to make you believe your opposition or competitor is holding a better card than they really are.

The art of bluffing has developed itself immensely over the years and is a promising way of turning the game around to favour you rather than your opponent. It is very likely that this will play a huge impact on future games therefore according to the statistics the participants are going to gradually increase the amount of bluffing that takes place in a game over time.

In this paragraph I would like to define the phrases “bluff” or “bluffing” to clear any misunderstanding you as a viewer may have about the meaning of the above words.
In simple terms a “bluff” or “bluffing” is when the opposition misguides you by portraying that he/she has a good hand when he/she actually doesn’t. As we have mentioned above this could be done using some of the techniques provided below.

  1. Using facial expressions to give a certain impression about the cards in hand.
  2. Portraying certain gestures to render the thinking of the opponent.
  3. Placing a bet involving a large amount of money when you have diminutive chance of winning.

Every form of poker consists of bluffing. Every player will often consider the tactic of bluffing but placing a bluff bet into the pot. This is normally done in hope of trying to psychologically outsmart his/her opponent to make them re-think if they have got a good hand or not.

It’s very likely that in you’re poker career you will have experienced someone trying to feed you a bluff; however you may not have realised that the hands you folded were due to an oversized bet by the opposition who was using the bluffing technique. This may be the case because normally you are not shown the cards that are being played by the bluffing player.

During your game if you ever experience that your competitor has turned a set of bluff cards over to you therefore you realise that they didn’t appear on the board or they appear to be hiding their bottom pair behind the bigger cards on the board, then, you may want to take in consideration that they are most likely trying to outsmart you.

As they say “once a bluffer always a bluffer” so if you ever experience someone trying to bluff you during the game then make a mental note of that person as they are going to always try to use that technique against his/her competitors and make bluffing part of there daily game.

I am not trying to portray that the opposition is lying on every oversized bet however it is extremely important that you consider the odds and outs before taking an action due to that hand.

Making a Bluff

In the above paragraphs we have been discussing about what a “bluff” is and how they are designed to work. In the paragraphs below we will try to explain in more detail how you can use bluffing to gain an upper hand in the form of poker you a competing in.

There are a number of points which have to be taken into consideration before attempting to enter a bluff against the opposition. This is where many non-experienced bluffers fail, because they don’t consider all the factors before placing an oversized bet into the pot. Consequently instead of gaining an upper hand in the game they receive a huge dent in there stacks or cash balance.

The players which decide to make bluffing a part of there daily game, need to analyze two factors which are noted below:

  1. Number of competitors still in the hand.
  2. Style of the competitors still in the hand.

The reason why it is vital to consider the above two factors is that if you’re going to make a bluff into a pot which still contains 5 or more competitors, then the likelihood is that your bet or raise will be called and with them calling, they are probably in a better position than yourself. This can conclude to a great number of chips or money being offered to the other competitors on the ‘cheap’ meaning that you know you can’t compete with them and come to a showdown.
