Staking in Poker :

Staking in poker is common practice in today’s global poker scene. Many players might be surprised to hear that many professional poker players will take a piece of each other as a stake. Staking is paying for a percentage of a poker players buy-in in order to take a percentage of their winnings. For the poker player it allows them to enter larger tournaments for a lower buy in and risk. For the staker it allows them to take a large profit if the poker player ends up succeeding in the tournament that he has stakes him in. Staking is not just limited to tournaments, poker players are also able to get stakes to play cash games. These arrangements are usually a lot more complicated that simply staking a poker players tournament buy-in.

Why Stake A Poker Player?

Well many players wonder why they should stake another Texas Holdem poker player. There are a number of reasons why a staker would decide to stake a poker player. The first if they are staking a good poker player they can expect a positive return on their stake. Even though a poker player might not cash every tournament they play in if they are a winning player in the long run they will win money. This then means that the staker will win money because he has a percentage of the players profits in a certain time period. Staking a good player is plus expected value to the staker and really all he has to do is watch his money make money.

Staking a poker player also allows other professional poker players to minimise their variance. For instance if there are two poker players playing in a tournament one of the two have more chance of cashing the tournament than just one on its own. By sharing a stake with another poker player they ensure that they gain close to their average return more often. Many poker players will take a piece of each other as a stake even though they are playing in the same tournament. This ensures that they reduce their variance as well as make the same amount of money on average. The only draw back is a poker player should find a fellow staker of the same skill level or above to ensure that he is not losing some of his expected value by staking his fellow poker player in return for a stake in his tournament winnings.

Finally staking allows smaller time poker players to share in the excitement of a big tournament without having to spend big bucks. Staking is a form of gambling as a staker cannot guarantee he will make money in the short run. Poker is always much more interesting to watch when a player has a stake in someone else playing the tournament. For just a few bucks a staker might have the chance to win back thousands in a large poker event such as the World Series of Poker Main Event.
