Qualities of a Good Poker Player

Poker is a game that plays on the emotions, strengths, and weaknesses of a person. The type of poker player you are is influenced by your personality outside of the game. Risk takers, for example, are more inclined towards aggressive play whenever they’re on the felt. Cunning players with a high level of self-confidence are also prone to bluffing. On the other hand, less confident players may resort to a very passive style of playing, taking few risks and going the ‘slow but steady’ route. This is, perhaps, the reason why a single poker strategy, no matter how ingenious it sounds, will not work on everybody. It would still depend on whether or not you, with your type of personality, can pull it off seamlessly or if you will be so transparent that the others will see through your plan immediately.

Patience
One of the things that you must remember if you want to be a good poker player is that you cannot play each hand that comes your way. Therefore, even when it becomes horribly boring to watch others play as you sit back and lie low when your hand is terrible, always remember that it is much better to be safe than sorry. You don’t want to lose your bankroll on a hand that did not have a snowball’s chance in hell anyway.  It is much better to wait for a good hand before you jump in and join the action. It takes a lot of patience to do this, but believe me, it pays off. So, even if you’ve been folding for 10 consecutive times because you’ve been getting bad cards, do not be tempted to play a mediocre hand just ‘because’.

Emotional Discipline
Poker is a game that can deeply affect one’s emotional state. In fact, there are many people who simply blow up during a game, especially when they lose. But this type of reaction is rare. Much more common is when people frown or get irritable when they are losing, or when they have a bad hand. Or, sometimes, a person can smile or even get cocky when he is winning or when he has a good hand. Of course, it’s normal to have an emotional reaction. The problem with this is that when you cannot control your emotions, your game becomes poorer – you either get too sloppily confident or too aggressively desperate. Furthermore, if your emotions show, you will be easily read by your opponents. This is actually where the expression ‘poker face’ comes in. A person who cannot be read through his emotions is a good poker player.

Financial Discipline
Fold if your hand is bad. Do not be afraid to cut your losses when it becomes obvious that you don’t have the better hand, even if you have already called and raised a few times. And, learn to quit while you’re ahead. These are three things that you need to remember when you manage your bankroll. Do not be too loose, but do not be too tight either. Learn to balance your bankroll, and you can assure that you will have a profit each time you play.

Ability to Read Others
Finally, learn to read the emotions of others. In much the same way that others can read you through your emotions, you can also do this by practicing.  You can learn a lot about a person and his hand through his body language. So, when you’re playing poker, you practically have the license to stare.
